A chilling scene of the rugged sea stacks off the rocky coastline of La Push, Washington State, July 2006.

The crisp rugged detail of the bulky boulders in the foreground set the mood for this chilling seascape which captures the harsh environment of the northern Pacific coast of Washington State. While they may seem uninviting to us, these rocky offshore islands (sea stacks) provide a sanctuary for many kinds of ocean birds. The desolate colorization and stark contours of the composition is contrasted by the happy white sea gulls as they seem to be quite at home in this harsh environment.
