An oceanside still life of a conch shell which seems to be floating on a piece of weathered driftwood
It was at Big Talbot Island, Florida, that I chanced to set this conch shell on a piece of driftwood nearby and came up with this moving still life. This desolate stretch of beach is one of the few undeveloped barrier islands left along the Atlantic coast. With gnarled piles and pieces of driftwood, foreboding rocky platforms, and weather-worn trees, this place is a photographer’s dream-come-true. The island is located 20 miles east of downtown Jacksonville on A1A North, immediately north of Little Talbot Island State Park. While technically this motif is a still life, the flowing lines give motion and add life to this lonely pair of deceased drifters. The texture has a fine grainy look and while the local color seems at first to be monochromatic, a closer look will reveal a myriad shades of beachy hues.
