WYATT - Helmeken Falls

Helmeken Falls, Canada

Helmeken Falls is located in the Wells Gray Provincial Park in Canada. It is an amazing waterfall to visit and worth the side detour off the main highway to see this natural wonder. About a half a million years ago volcanos in this area erupted spewing lava throughout the valleys and exhisting river beds. The lava built up layer by layer and cooled into column like rocks. During the last ice age, a few thousand years ago, silt laden water from melting glaciers carved the Helmcken canyon through the layers of lava. The Murtle river is still enlarging the canyon today. Helmcken Falls is 141 meters tall. Compare that to the 50 meters of Niagara Falls.
