Old pilings from a Steamboat landing on the Columbia.

Up until the first half of the 20th century, before the Interstate highways were completed, the Columbia River served as the major 'water highway,' linking small towns up and down the Columbia Gorge.

All that remains of the old transportation infrastructure is wooden pilings, like the ones shown here, and some restored docks that are still being used by River boats, now operating as tourist attractions.
