A couple stands and waits patiently while the ferry returns from dropping a passenger off on the other side of the river. They stand on the side of a small dirt road while their driver brushes down his horse. Two other passengers sit and wait, one underneath a tree on the side of the road, one seated in the coach. The chestnut-colored horse at the center of the painting seems particularly striking.
