Edgar Degas
Degas, a French impressionist sculptor and painter, is best known for his compositions of ballerinas, women and horse racing scenes. Unlike his Impressionist contemporaries, Degas was not fascinated with how natural light affected a piece. He was instead interested with movement and people. Degas was heavily influenced by close friend Manet as well as Japanese graphic art. Degas' 'Ballerine' portrays a group of young ballerinas. The dancers are fully costumed in vivid blue tutus. They diligently practice their steps while awaiting their turn to perform onstage.
