John C. H. Grabill, 1890
Calamity peak, near Custer was named for 'Calamity Jane' one of Deadwood's most famous residents. With her penchant for bawdy behavior and deadly aim, Calamity and Jane were the perfect pair. In this image Grabill has captured the landmark that bears her name, set amongst the beatiful wildlife of the west; rolling grasses, tall trees, and beautiful rock formations. Taken in 1890, this Grabill original is truly breathtaking.
