Mono Lake

Bob Lilly
Mono Lake is an extremely unique and interesting body of water located in California's Eastern Sierra region.

The scene captured in this photograph is of a beautiful sunset at Mono Lake, an extremely unique and interesting body of water located in California's Eastern Sierra region. The water is so salty and the alkalinity so high that it can cause death if a human being drinks it. Attempts have been made in the past to introduce fish into the ecosystem, but without much success. The strange rock formations that can be seen poking out of the water in front are actually limestone, and are called tufa towers. These formations can sometimes grow as tall as thirty feet; however, they only grow under water, so the fact that these are visible means that the water level of the lake has dropped several feet.
