Northwest
Congress approved in 1803 a proposal by President Thomas Jefferson requesting twenty five hundred dollars to fund an expedition to the Pacific Northwest. Meriwether Lewis, Jefferson’s secretary, lead the newly formed Corps of Discovery with his friend, William Clark. Jefferson desired to open a northwest passage through the Rocky Mountains, linking his 18 year-old nation to the Pacific Ocean, possibly allowing for direct trade with Asia. Lewis and Clark discovered, after crossing the mountains, the abundant salmon fishing region used for thousands of years by indigenous tribes. The original inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest, the Folsom and Marmes peoples, settled there after crossing the land bridge from Asia. Today, pictographs and rock paintings, contemporaneous with the cave paintings at Lascaux and Alta Mira, remain on walls in the gorge. At the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition, native tribes such as the Yakama and Nez Perce traveled from all over the Northwest to trade for dried salmon along the Columbia River. After the US government negotiated a treaty with the local tribes in 1855, stealing from them their ancient fishing lands, settlers began to pour into this area by the thousands, descending through the mountains along the Oregon Trail.
