 In an increasingly urban society we are often left with only
asphalt and traffic to fill our final visions of the day. Yet
just as we capture moments to be remembered, so we can also
capture the beauty that escapes us, in a nature photo. The word
photography is derived from the Greek words for light and
writing, and it is at this intersection of language that we find
the transcendental art of the nature photo. For with
photography one is able to couple the tangible with the
ethereal, recording forever the essence of a moment.
Before the inception of
photography humankind had to rely upon the paintings of others
in order to connect with the rest of the world. Yet the artist
has evolved into a different kind of storyteller. There is a
certain rawness to photography that cannot be glossed over or
refurbished by the imagination; there is a sense of truth that
is inescapable, no matter the aims of the person behind the
camera. The objective aspects of a nature photo, however, are
precisely what makes the conceptions and experiences of the
viewer so central to its appreciation. Thus, while the artist
or photographer, may bring certain visions to the composition of
an amazing nature photo, it is the viewer that truly frees the
art within each image.
 The silent reprieve of a photograph gives the observer’s imagination free
reign; it creates a quiet space in which a glimpse of life can
be perceived in any way that one may wish. The conversation
between art and humanity leaves much room for interpretation. A
waterfall may seem serene and majestic as it flows into a pool
below, surrounded by flora and fauna of vibrant color and
surprising shape. Yet the same image may also invoke the spirit
of the untamable: the near-violence of rushing water crashing
into the boiling pool below, encircled by exotic and wild plant
life. Perhaps a night sky, or pastoral image may be more to your
