Bird Pictures,

Bird pictures always make interesting and aesthetically pleasing decorations. Birds, with nine to ten thousand species living
(and one hundred thirty extinct), prevail as the most diverse terrestrial vertebrate. These bipedal animals are warm blooded,
yet lay eggs like reptiles. Birds are distinguished as being covered by feathers, having a bony toothless beak as a mouth, and
having forelimbs modified as wings. Because they are small, birds have a high metabolic rate. Birds also have hollow, yet very strong,
bones that make them lighter and facilitate flight. Most bird species are diurnal, they are awake during the day, but some species,
such as owls, are nocturnal.
Some birds are able to fly for long periods at a time and migrate hundreds of miles. Birds like the albatross spend all their time at sea and some birds, the frigate bird, for instance, can even sleep while flying. Birds known as ratites have lost the ability to fly
over time. These flightless birds are usually island dwelling, like penguins and kiwis, or are larger birds, like emus and ostriches.
Flightless birds are more vulnerable to extinction; human expansion has brought an end to many flightless species such as the Great Auk
and the Dodo.
We have a diverse selection of bird pictures in our collection, one of the most impressive being the bald eagle, a raptor native to
North America. This large and majestic bird’s population has been severely depleted by poaching and many laws are in place to ensure
the bald eagle’s recovery. It is even against the law to be in possession of a single bald eagle feather. However, owning pictures
of this bird is not illegal.
Our bird pictures also include Canadian Geese. This bird is distinguished by its black plumage and white chinstrap. Native to Canada
and the Northern US, this bird lives off of aquatic plants and sometimes mollusks and crustaceans. They usually build their nests on
elevated spots near bodies of water, often on top of beaver damns. These geese usually migrate into the US during winter, but when
living in milder climates, like the Pacific Northwest, the Canadian Goose often ceases to migrate altogether. This is the most
wide-ranging bird in our bird picture collection, found in Scandinavia, Siberia, and China.
The Peregrine Falcon, a medium-sized falcon about the size of a large crow, also inhabits our collection of bird pictures. These
birds are usually colored blue-gray with black stripes. The Peregrine Falcon eats smaller birds like pigeons, ducks, and parrots.
The falcon attacks its prey by flying high and diving at unsuspecting victims. This dive is known as “stooping” and can reach speeds
of over two hundred miles per hour, making this bird the fastest animal on earth. So take a look at pictures of our Peregrine Falcons
and our other bird pictures, here for your enjoyment.
